Birth with a Doula

We are Karen and Tara, the owners of Bump Birth & Beyond LLC.  We are certified birth and postpartum doulas, as well as certified lactation professionals. Bump Birth & Beyond was started because we personally experienced the lack of

prenatal education, birth workers and postnatal lactation support in our surrounding area NC Counties: Cumberland, Harnett, Johnston, Sampson, Wake and Wayne.  We are both passionate about helping families with new babies! WE OFFER PRENATAL CLASSES, DOULA SERVICES and LACTATION SUPPORT.  Most everyone is familiar with and has an understanding of the benefits of prenatal classes and lactation support,  but not everyone is acquainted with what a doula is...

A birth doula is a professionally trained, support specialist, who provides emotional and physical support to an expectant mother.  A doula focus areas are in prenatal preparation (exercises, coping skills for pain), labor, birth and postpartum.  As birth doulas, we do not replace the mother’s support partner. We hold space for her partner, so that her partner can process the birth of the new baby and show up for the mother long after our work is finished...  Being familiar with Spinning Babies, we incorporate their techniques in our prenatal appts, which help prepare mother for labor and birth.

A postpartum doula provides evidenced-based information regarding infant feeding, emotional and physical  recovery from birth, mother-baby bonding, infant soothing and basic newborn care.  The main goal of a postpartum doula is to "mother the mother" and nurture the entire family as they transition into life with a new baby.  This would include helping mom and dad feel comfortable in their roles, sharing education on family adjustment and tending to the unique needs of the new mother.

An example of  some of these duties may include:  Breastfeeding support, help with emotional and physical recovery following birth, light housekeeping so that mom will feel less overwhelmed, running errands, assist with diapering, bathing, feeding and comforting, light meal preparation, baby soothing techniques, siblings. Most postpartum  doulas can provide services for a family for a few days or up to a few weeks after baby is home.  Families may want a want a postpartum doula's assistance for 1-3 days a week or as many as 5 days a week.

A mother's birth experience matters.  A family's birth experience matters.  The postpartum experience matters.  As mothers ourselves, we’ve had the beautiful experience of pregnancy and bringing our own babies into the world. We are fully aware that a mother’s body is capable of amazing and miraculous functions! A woman’s body is made for childbirth.   An expectant mother should be encouraged to listen to her body, listen to herself, as she labors and gives birth.  The postpartum period is difficult with much anxiety for most every mother...we understand.

The first few weeks after bringing a baby home from the hospital can be overwhelming for everyone in the home.   We passionately believe that all women deserve the delicate support of a knowledgeable and caring doula by her side support, as she gives birth and begins to mother her baby.  It our mission to help mothers have the best birth and postpartum experience as possible!

Blessings,

 Karen & Tara
